I have been waiting to buy a new TV for quite some time, and every time I itch to pull the trigger, something new pops up on the horizon. I plan on buying a 50 in TV, and will keep it for at least 5 years. I will be seated 10ft away from the TV. From 10 ft away, will I see a huge difference between a 720p and a 1080p tv ?
Follow Ups:
i would buy now and enjoy it,,that being said you can get into a 50" 720p plasma set for about 2500..vizio 50" set you can order it direct ,, or i would just stroll on down to my local costco and pick itup there ,, aslo they have a kick ass return policy
i wouldn't deal with rp's , i have never liked their awkward veiwng angles and dropouts,, also you will be looking at a bulb replacement for sure,,do not let anyone try ans scare you away form a plasma, cause right now , t i think they are it when it comes to picture quality and also living room realestate, hell it was way eisaier tlaking the wife into a 50" plasma than the 62" rp i thought about getting,,
also on thw 1080p format issue,, there isn't gonna be any source material for a while and second the broadcasters are not gonna give up the bandwidth to deliver a true 1080p signal anytime in the forseable future,, (maybe in the next 5yrs,, if we are very lucky) , i mean look how long it took for us to get marginal high-def??
so i wouldn't wait out for that 1080 set just yet ,, i would find somehting now that 1, meets your budget requirement, 2 has great PQ,,and then see in the future if you will even ultilize 1080p,,,
allright i have gone on enough now,, ,
later,,, good luck ,, have fun shopping,,
.
what did you decide???
life is too short to wait for 1080p :)
yeah , i couldn't stand it either longer,, so i went out and purchased the 50" vizio at costco,, and got her hung up and loving HD and i am playing xbox through it aswell , ,great freaking PQ,,,
enjoy,,,
If you are a videophile there is a uge difference between 720p and 1080p. I was at CES and the 1080P sets are awesome. I just ordered a Epson 3LCD that upconverts and displays all video in 1080P. It's still 3 months away. I would wait 6 months and buy anything that is 1080P. Read the specs. There are sets out there now that says they are 1080P. But then the specs says they will only accept 1080i. I almost bought a Sony Qualia 006. Then I read the specs. Thats why I'm buys the Epson monitor.
Heres a different way to look at it. If you MUST have a plasma, wait for the 1080p plasmas to come out, assuming you'll be able to afford them. If you MUST have a TV now, get the Sony LCOS-far superior IMO, than most current plasmas.

Make sure the set accepts and displays a 1920x1080p input. With very few exceptions, nearly every display on the market today is a tutorial in marketing double-speak. They advertise the display as a 1080p display, but it either can't accept a 1920x1080p input or, if it accepts a 1920x1080p input, can't display 1920x1080 individual pixels. Read this: http://www.videoasylum.com/ht/messages/22013.htmlIf a 50" display is your limit, only Pioneer and Panasonic have shown prototype plasmas for the 1920x1080 resolution in that size. As to whether you will be able to distinguish all of the 1920x1080 resolution from 10ft away, that will depend on your vision acuity. And unless it's very good, I doubt most people will see the benefit when "a huge difference" is what they're looking for. Move up to > 60" and it will be a different story, moreso with a native 1920x1080p source.
You're right about "something new pops up on the horizon" being the recurring theme. Have you heard about SED? If not, you probably won't want to read this (especially the after-CES comments beginning on pg26 of the SED thread):
