Please help to clarify this question if you have the answer:If you connect a powered sub to the L/R pre-out on the receiver instead of the usual subwoofer pre-out and set the main speakers to large with no sub on the receiver, will the LFE signal encoded in DD5.1 be sent to the main speakers + the sub? Or the LFE is sent to the sub channel only? Thanks.
In most receivers and pre-amps, if you set the sub to "No" in the menus the LFE gets routed to the main speakers, including the main pre-outs. In some cases, you may have to set a menu option to send the LFE to the main speakers.Since LFE can go up to 120Hz (in theory), your setup could have the LFE being split or shared between the subwoofer and the main speakers. There are varying opinions as to whether this is a good idea or not. Someone who is mostly interested in music might prefer your setup, while someone who is primarily into HT might prefer using the sub-out connection.
As suggested by the other posts, the way LFE is actually handled when bass management is set to "no subwoofer" varies with the processor design. With some processors, doing what you suggest is indeed possible, with others it is not. I know that Yamaha processors (i.e., their DD/DTS receivers and integrated amps) have a feature called "LFE/Bass Out" which, when set to "Main", allows you to send LFE information to the main speakers and not to the sub (assuming, of course, that the main speakers have been set as "large").
My understanding is that the LFE is only active with AC-3 and is always output to the sub output only. Most processors use the same output as the sub out for music and the LFE out for AC-3; what is passed depends on the speaker settings and the source selected. It wouldn't surprise me to find other setup schemes, however. According to the instructions with my processor, if there is no sub selected the LFE is routed to the center and not the mains. Seems a poor idea to me, but I don't have to worry about it in my application.
I have my sub connected across the L/R pre-outs,with the speakers set to "large" and the sub set to "none",mainly so I can use a much lower crossover than the 100Hz-ish point provided by the processor. I'd assume that all LFE is sent to the sub in this config.,but I'm not sure what the DD specification is in this case. You might have better luck posting here,
