Looking to try that HDMI input on my new Pioneer plasma HDTV to see how much better will the picture get over component input. Thanks!

Oppo Digital OP-DV971H. DVI output only, but comes with a DVI-HDMI converter cable. All the bells and whistles, and picture quality rivals units costing thousands of dollars.

It will play DVD+R/+RW, but I'm not entirely sure about dual layer. I don't see why not, it seems to play everything else, and dual layer has been around for a while.

Oppo will be releasing a new DVD player in late March or April. The Mediatek decoder they will be using is highly rated, has no visible layer change, is very responsive to commands and it will output 480i 4:2:2 YCbCr via its HDMI output. Your plasma will be responsible for deinterlacing and scaling, but it will be fed about as pure a signal as you can get.You can also check out one of Panasonic's HDMI players. The S97 and S77 will not output 480i, but the 480p (or higher) signal will be deinterlaced by a Faroudja FL23xx series, which also handles any upconverting as well via HDMI.
Whatever you do, be sure to keep the signal going to the plasma in the YCbCr digital video format (as opposed to the digital PC format, should any of the players you choose offer this output).
Check out the numerous threads at avsforum.com in the DVD Hardware section for more insights and owner comments. You can also check out the Benchmark section at Secrets to see player comparisons.
What's the difference and which one is better? Thanks!
The Faroudja FL23xx is a combination deinterlacer/scaler. The Mediatek is an MPEG decoder. They are parts that serve different functions in a DVD player.
