My Scientific Atlanta 8000HD cable box has DVI out and my Panasonic CRT 34wx54 monitor has HDMI in. Before I spring for a new cable will I still need to run analog cables between the cable box and monitor with the DVI/HDMI cable?
Follow Ups:
SA HDMI to a SONY DVI TV.
Use regular audio cables and one HDMI to DVI.
All set.
You'll learn all about the bug in SA's box though dealing
this setup.GTF
My SA cable box has the DVI and the HD monitor has the HDMI. What SA box do you have? What "bug" are you talking about?
My EXPLORER 8300HD will post a message on my TV saying that my
TV doesn't support HDMI. I have to turn the 8300HD off and then
back on. Sometimes I just have to hit a different channel and it
will work correctly again.
It's a known bug and hopefully SA will come up with a fix.
Not all TV's have a HDMI input, just DVI.
Same picture quality just two extra wires needed. AudioGTF
BTW sometimes the digital channels just output crap and I have to
turn off the 8300HD to restore a picture.
Looks like they have a ways to go yet with digital TV transmission.
That sucks. I recently switched cable providers. The other one used the Pioneer box and with the new provider I've witnessed distrubing "picture pause" on the HDnet movie channel. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the new provider, the box or the channel [though never noticed the problem on this channel with other provider].
Up in NY I had Cablevision, run by the Dolan-stick it to us-family.
I had less issue's with them.GTF
You will need to run a pair of interconnected for the audio. The piture will benefir from the higher quality DVI output however DVI does not suport audio. I have the same set up on my SA set top box and a Samsung HD set.
Did you compare the DVI> HDMI to the component cables? TIA.
Yes I did. I had the componenet cables hooked up for about four months before I made the switch at Christmas time. The DVI cable is more detailed resulting in a better sharper picture. I would never go back to the analog cables. The SA DVR box has an HDMI output which carries the audio signal as well by the way.
Thanks, sounds like I should contact WOW and see if they have the SA8300HD box that has the HDMI out.
I am not the SA box expert here but I think that the only SA boxes that have the HDMI output ar ethe ones that have a hard drive in them. At least that's the way it is here in NJ. Be interesting to see if you can find out otherwise.
I read somewhere about the "chirping" from the SA box. I noticed this the other day and had no idea what was going on. The SA8000HD box is a DVR, so it has a hard drive.
Somtimes I wish I could put it into another room.
It's the drive.
