My new Panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma has a "Just" mode that stretches only the sides while the center of the picture remains undistorted. It is done so well that you need a crawling text at the bottom to tell (by the way the text stretches at each end).
Follow Ups:
On my Panasonic plasma, I use the FULL mode. In the JUST mode, images are stretched at the ends and look horrible, especially during horizontal pans and any type of "tickers" across the bottom or top of the screen. I don't see how anyone can watch in the JUST mode after they noticed the forementioned visual eye-sores.
Toshiba's roller-coaster stretcher:
mt 51" RP SONT has this mode and calls it "wide zoom". I absolutely hate it and never use it.
