I have had the new Panasonic PH-42PX60U plasma TV for about 10 days now. It is fabulous! HD channels are stunning. SD channels are good to mediocre. DVD's are fantastic. Sound is Ok, much better with external speakers. I use the Acoustic Energy Aego2. Price was $2250 plus tax, free delivery. I could not be happier.

To be sure, these will be "first generation" plasmas, so price will take several years to drop to more "manageable" levels. And at this point, I think a 60" and a 50" inch have been announced, but in the future, I imagine a 42" will also be added to the product line.

Plasma is a bit behind when it comes to 1080p displays. I gather, that they will be hideously expensive for a while.
