In Reply to: Current Recs on 42 Inch TV. - DLP, LCD, Plasma ?????? posted by Cut-Throat on March 27, 2006 at 17:07:49:
To answer your question directly with the 42" parameter in place the technology that will provide the most film-like image is plasma. As I mentioned previously plasma and DLP were developed for playback of DVD/HD/NTSC broadcast images. Given the 42" limit this rules out DLP as one must stay away from rear projection digital displays like the plague. DLP is phenomenal, and preferred, but only as a front projector. LCD started life as a relatively static display technology ie: wrist watch, calculator displays, more recently Power Point presentations, hence the never ending quest to morph the technology to accomodate the fast refresh rates required for a quality image. No matter what, even with 3ms response times the pixels on an LCD have to be spaced apart to accomodate the electronics that drive the panel therefore the ever present "screen door" effect. As well LCD is a transmissive technology, there is a light source behind the panel which is always on when the panel is active so relatively mediocre blacks. Anyhow a properly calibrated Marantz PD4250 or the Panasonic 42" CURRENT generation plasma will knock your socks off!
