I have built a quiet PC for HT applcations. I want to use it primariliy as an audio transport but also for playback of HDef movies recorded by friend from sattelite receiver.
My TV is a HD crt with DVI input. I have tried playing HD samples through the main video output of the on-board video card (nVidia 6150, 256MB) but I was't impressed. I am wondering if getting a better video card would change anything.
I see that a new GeForce 7600 GS has a passive heatsink which would also help to keep things cool. Should I excpect any improvment worth investment?
Follow Ups:
I use a GeForce 5600XT AGP card in my MythTV box, and it works great. It's only SVHS out, but the quality is excellent.Another benefit of the 7xxx series is you can use nVidia's PureVideo to use the card's processor to speed up video decoding (WMV, H.264 and MPEG2.) I've been playing around with it and it looks pretty good. The video quality is marginally better, but CPU usage drops around 30% on my 3GHz P4. You have to pay for PureVideo, but you can try it out for free to see if you like it.
/*Music is subjective. Sound is not.*/
I guess it all depends on if the board has an AGP slot or PCI-e.
I have in my High-end HTPC a Gigabyte 6600GT that is passively cooled. It can pass a hi-def signal through it's DVI connection. I have 4 other computers with the same card with no problems.
