I'd say that I get good to excellent (depending on the channel) sound going from the analogue L/R audio outs on my cable box to my 2 channel audio system.Might the sound be improved by using the digital out on the cable box to a DAC?

Kal's right that DAC's will not accept the DD signal, but a HT receiver will, and can process that signal however you want. I used DH labs digital cable to my panasonic 'digital' receiver and it sounded perty nice. if you have an ht receiver, it's definitely worth a try.

No I tried just as a comparison & the dig sonics were very harsh & the dac would lock on & off at times...
That's probably because it is outputting DolbyDigital, not S/PDIF. Most audio DACs cannot handle DD.
