It sounds like you are using the dvd decoder. How did you connect your dvd to your receiver? Is it through the digital audio out (this would require 1 coax/toslink cable) of the dvd player to the digital audio in of the receiver or through the 5.1 output (this would require 6 cables) of the dvd player to the 5.1 input of the receiver. If you connect your dvd player to your receiver using the former, you are using the receiver's decoder (which you should be using), while the latter means you are using the dvd player's decoder.
Hope this helps....
My system is connected with optical cableout from dvd to input to amp 1 cable
You are connected fine, the Sony DVD player in question will not pass the DTS bitstream. You will need a DVD player that has a DTS OUT logo on it. Go to the following link for more info.
The DVD player must be able to pass the DTS signal, I don't mean it needs a DTS decoder. The DTS digital bitstream is different than the DD bitstream and some players will not pass this signal to the decoder(reciever). If your player does not have the DTS output logo on it it more than likely will not pass the DTS butstream thus reverting back to the DD stream. This sounds like what is happening here and you will need a DVD player that has a DTS output, not a DTS decoder, These are 2 seperate capabilities.
