Picked up a Denon DVD-5910 last night ($1,800 new from local dealer)And immediately via HDMI could see it IS way better than the Denon DVD-2910 I had before.
(The Denon dealer had FIVE new ones.. not b-stock either and was having trouble selling them with HD-DVD and Bluray around. For me, the 5910 is just where I want to be positioned)
Way more film-like and the color is soooo much more. (I bought the Sony 42" plasma because of it's fantastic color palette, and the 5910 does it justice.
Now I have to decide if the $300 upgrade to 1080p from Denon is worth doing?
Anyone know just what the technique they use to bump the output up from 1080i to 1080p?
Follow Ups:
.........I’m glad you like your new Denon player.I want one but here in Australia the new ones that output 1080p have a recommended retail price of $5308 US dollars. Because we only get a handful of players each month there is virtually no discounting.
The best price I can get one for is $4929 US dollars. When I hear people picking them up for under 2K it makes it hard for me to pull the trigger.
Have fun with your new player :o)

I am really feeling good about buying the 5910!
It was sitting there at the dealer forever...(first it was at $3,000 then $2,500 then $2,000 then I made an offer waving my credit card...) I had a 2910 and wondered if going for the 5910 was stupid (a waste of money better spent some other way) but now I am a happy girl!
The picture on my Sony 42" XS955 Plasma is much clearer and more detailed, The color is far more sophisticated.
Whoo Hoo!!!!
I need to see tonight what it does for a black and white pic like "Hidden Fortress"...

My Oppo has been sent back to get fixed-keeps freezing up on me. At least 1/4 of my collection is not R1, so I'm addicted to region free players. It can probably be hacked/modded, but at that price I'ld rather not have to deal with that. I'm just looking at options at the moment, depending on how things go.
