The clock is ticking (a little over a week,) and I still haven't purchased a HDTV to watch the World Cup. All the games will be broadcast in HDTV (half the games will be on ESPN2 which is not available in HDTV in my area,) and I'd like to get a new TV, but I feel paralyzed. I can't spend more than $2,000. I thought I had narrowed it down to either the Panasonic 37" plasma or the 42" Sony WEGA projection LCD, but then I became aware of the much cheaper off brand LCD's (Syntax, Viewsonic, etc.) I really don't watch that much tv (I have yet to get into home theater or even renting movies to watch at home) other than soccer. Are the off brands "good enough" and reliable enough, or should I go for the high quality name brands? Which choice would handle SD material best? I will be using cable for my signal.
Follow Ups:
It's $2K at Costco.It's a 50 inch plasma.
Doesn't have a tuner, so you'll need satellite or cable.
Very good deal for the money.
I know this is out of your price range, but Circuit City is now selling the Panasonic 50" 60U for $3K. This is about as good as it gets. Just 3-4 months ago, the previous model, the 50U, which wasn't as good, was the best selling 50" Plasma in the world and sold for $3800.
So in my mind, you only have two choices
Let your wife decide what tv to buy. Later on you won't have any regrets of spending $2000 on a stupid tube when you could have bought yourself a lot of music or another piece of equipment
Yeah..I second letting your wife decide. That way if there are any regrets, you can alway blame her!
