I am thinking of buying a used Harmon Kardon HT receiver that has Dolby Prologic and no Dolby Digital. I now have Pioneer Dolby Digital receiver that is ok, but I think I would prefer HK sound quality for stereo music, which is about 99% of the use it will get. How much will I miss not having Dolby Digital for movies? Is Prologic good enough? I am not a big sound effects kind of guy, but I care a lot about sound quality for music.
Follow Ups:
when I went from ProLogic to Dolby Digital on movies. Pro Logic is such a compromise, even on soundtracks that don't have a lot of surround/rear channel information. Just for starters, the dialog was much more understandable with Dolby Digital/DTS.If you buy a receiver with the room calibration feature as I did, you'll have the benefit of a system exactly tailored to your room, as well.
...which specific receivers you have and are considering. That makes it pretty tough to offer any judgement. Likely, IMO, you may see some but not much of an appreciable difference.
The speakers are Infinity Primus 360s in front, Infinity Primus center, and Minimus 7s in rear. Pioneer DVD, Denon CD, Nakamichi cassette deck.
I used ot have a Nak deck years back... CRII or something.
8 ohms and 93db, very easy to drive, so that should not be an issue. If you prefer an HK sound over the Pioneer then maybe the change will be worth it. I'd try one out before doing all of that though.
Is there something you don't like about your system now that you want to change? I think you may miss the DD vs PL when it comes to movies.
My Pioneer VSX711 is too bright, especially with the Pioneer DVD. Not as bad with the Denon. The Infinity Primus line was voiced with HK amps.
Don't sell your Pioneer before confirming you're happy with the HK though.
