I am putting together a system for music and movies with music getting a little more playing time. Room is 17x17x8. I had thought about a Receiver, but I found a great deal on a Lexicon LX-7 amp, so I will likely go with an Arcam AVP-700, Sunfire GTP-5, or Adcom AVM-40 processor with a cheap HDMI DVD player for now( until after the shake-out of HD-DVD Vs. Blu-ray. Speaker Choice? I can get both the Monitor Audio RS8 Silver's/ RS 1's/ RS LcR/ with a to be detemined sub( Have not been that impressed with Monitor subs). I have also researched a Dynaudio Focus 220/ with 140's or 110's/ 200 c. I realize that there are probably many greater choices, however, I can easily get as stated the Monitor Audio's or the Dynaudio's. The Dyn's would be harder and more expensive to get, no dealers in my area. I am leaning toward the RS-Silver's. I have always liked the sound of MA speakers, again they are more affordable than the Dyn's which is important for me now. I wonder if anyone out there has a lot of demo time with any of the indicated speakers, and what would be a good sub, if I go with the Monitor RS 8 Silver's or the Dynaudio's. Which processor of the three would be best and why? Finally, can anyone recommend a stop gap HDMI DVD player for under $200 that is good with music and video. ANy input will be greatly appreciated.
Follow Ups:
...you're going to be listening to much music.I'm the opposite of Late - I don't like most HT speakers playing music, so I would recommend buying dynamic *musical* speakers instead. I also think the quality of the sub is more important than the quantity. It is more important to me that a sub be quick and tuneful than just vaguely booming. I use very musical speakers (Nola Minis & Nola Thunderbolt sub) that serve well for both music and movies. (There are tons of choices both retail and on-line.)
I'd prefer the Dynaudios over the Silvers, but that's just my ears. If you really love the Silvers go for it. Personally, I would shop around and not be in too much of a hurry...but I'm guessing you're IN a hurry. ;-)
Late is right about two things - square rooms are the very devil for sound (placement and room treatment will be key); and Hsu has some great bargains in subs.
Hi,
at the very least about how much a pain in the ass is it is to
get a processor fixed.I have stereo speakers, and only stereo speakers, in my HT.
They work fine, but stereo speakers don't have flat feq response. There are combo speakers, and rather expensive speakers that have flat freq response, but still manage to sound good.
But... his case is a tough one. I suggested HT speakers to make dealing with the room acoustics easier. By dumping all the bass onto the sub, it gives you at least a chance to shove the sub around into a spot that works tolerably well.
Hi,
you have a problem. Square rooms are an acoustic nightmare.
You will need some bass traps. My big concern with processors is reliability. Your preferences may vary. Sending one away to get fixed is a ROYAL pain in the buttocks.
My preference for HT is to use HT speakers. They are very different animals than those designed for stereo.
Subs.... two thoughts, for cheap call Dr Hsu. For a good one get the top of the line Paradigm.
Btw, my room is 18 feet long, I could not get the rear speakers back far enough. So I just use the stereo speakers I had when I started the whole HT thing (yes, I realise that contradicts what I said before)
