There will be 720p and 1080i broadcasts from "Sky" satellite, they will alternate.
My projector was stolen in a robbery so I'm going to get a 720p widescreen HDTV ready one to replace it. There does not seem to be a 1080 resolution one. Even the plasmas seem to only support 720 horizontal lines.
Question:
Does the 1080i get compressed to fit on the 720 lines, losing detail, or does the interlaced picture in some way get fully shown by using the horizontal resolution by alternating the use of the horizontal pixels?
Is 720p any good? Remember we have 576i on PAL. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement? The eye is fooled by interlacing quite well, so the fact that it is going progressive doesn't seem to me to be much of a move. 1080i seems much more exciting if I can be sure it is displayed effectively. Over here the hype is that there is four times the resolution on 720p but I can't work out why.
1080p is a long way off and very expensive to get a projector here.
Follow Ups:
P= "Progressive"
I= "Interlaced"all current HDTV tvs will do 720P or 1080i.
Only newer 1080P can do that one.
There is currently NO 1080P content available!!!! Until HD DVD is widely available.

It is widely available.
HD DVD Has 1080i output, despite having 1080p discs.

Only small 32 inch or less LCD ones. Even the plasmas and projectors only have native resolution supporting 720p and no more. Shame really. Everything is £ for $ compared to USA as well so we are improverished!
If a TV can do 720P it can do 1080i.1080P is the one you can't do yet- only Mitsubishi has a 1080P DLP TV so far as I know.
All of the plasmas and projectors here have around 720 pixel rows on their panels. They'll show 720p naturally, but compress 1080i. They will accept 1080i but do not alternately put the frames down the 720 rows, they have to reprocess, losing resolution.
.
There are 1080p TVs and projectors out there. The TVs are getting more common, look at the Sony SXRD LCOS TVs (they should be available there), 1080 Projectors are rare birds, and will cost you, but they do exist. The difference between 1080p and 720p native resolution is quite noticable. I don't really know whats available in the UK, but I would think that the same sets, more or less, that are available here would be there.
shop around and see whats out there.

I can't see much below £8,000, $15,000. Here things are a little more expensive.
So is there a big difference between 1080i on a 1080 line resolution plasma or projector and it processed down to 720p?
Hi,
a dirtly little 'secret' is that most providers downres. This is especially true of satellites. Bandwidth is limited so they squeeze as many channels in as they can; and some of the Hi in your HiDef gets squeezed out.If they aren't bastards, it will still look good. The danger is not
so much in static picture quality is that with the signal strem squeezed pixelisation during movement can become realy bad.Get something nice; but don't spend a fortune until this has a chance
to mature.

You'll still enjoy it - a lot.
