Admittedly, I'm not a video hound. I just want to know what they were thinking when they came up with a selection when you tried to play a DVD? Anything other than INSERT and PLAY is ridiculous. Optional program features is understandable, but to make every video experience the equivalent of programming a VCR is the height of ridiculousness. Obviously, they got away with it because well, DVD compared to VCR, is a no-brainer.I am also curious as to what typically controls this behavior, i.e. when a DVD is first inserted and what the next action is? Is it the DVD software or the player that requires this? I do suspect it is the player. I also suspect that they want a cognizant being able to read the FBI disclaimer, which is why it is not made easier.

I for one prefer a choice of audio surround options, wide screen versus full screen (if both are offered), subtitle choice (if offered), and commentaries (if offered). The only complaint I have about menus is that some of them give away too much of the film's content prior to one actually having seen the film.
And this is 2006, not 1997: your post belongs in the 20th Century. Why bring this up nearly 10 years after the format was launched?Anyway, they're called UPOs (User Prohibited Operations) and they are recorded on the DVD when it's mastered. Want to get rid of them? Use a decrypting program that deletes them and burn a perfect copy without that crap, region coding or the Macrovision signal. Let's say you're in Region 1 and have a Region 3 movie with several extras, an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track, a French 2.0 track and an English DTS 6.1 track. You just want the movie with the DTS track and you want the movie to start up as soon as the disc enters your Region 1 player. Takes less than 10 minutes to do before disc burning.
