I've been the owner of a Panasonic PH42PWD6 42" plasma for about 3 years and it is still the best pictures I've seen.
I bought the next model PH42PWD7 (for work) and somehow I never got
the same level of quality. Now I am thinking of buying the 50"
PH50PWD8 as I really like the size, I watch TV from about 16ft.
I noticed that on this set the "Component Video terminal board" is an optional extra, it was standard with the PWD6, so my question is
would I need this component board to achieve the same picture quality
that I have.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I have trouble believing they would make an expenisve tv now that had component video as an option.weird...
Your impressions are correct, 42 inches is the sweet spot. I have a
53" DLP set and often wish it was just a little smaller. Of course, when I had a 45" set I often wished it was bigger :)
I thought HDMI was the new standard. Component is slowly being minimized.

Besides, I didn't say it was a *good* standard.

This was my point about the different versions when I asked you the question below (thanks for your excellent technical response, by the way). HDMI products are designed to work with each other seamlessly . The different/updated versions of HDMI are backward compatible. What this means is that a product with v1.0 will work with a product with v1.1 or v1.2 without a problem. The only catch is that when using these two products together you will be limited to the capabilities of the lower version. Why are there problems existing with HDMI products? It's because manufacturers have implemented HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, the copy protection system) in a rather "un" seamless way. It's the HDCP incompatibilities, which most often can be attributed to polling discrepancies, that are screwing things up -- not HDMI.
