I posted this over in the amp/preamp section but didn't get any replies.I've ordered the Denon 3930 Universal Player and want to know if I need to upgrade from my Luxman (early 90's model) preamp/tuner to take full advantage of the connection options of the Denon.
Follow Ups:
.. but only for stereo on sacd or dvd-a. Just use the anolog inputs on your pre and the anolog outputs on the Dennon. If you want to listen to hi-rez multi channel you will need a pre or avr receiver with 6 or 8 channel anolog inputs. Digital intput will not be hi-rez.
connection to take advantage of the Denon 3930's capability of playing the SACD and DVD Audio multi channel recording. They do sound excellent if it's played on a properly set-up system.
Could I do the same thing with a multi-channel receiver? That way I could have the pre/pro and the additional amps for the supporting channels. Or is it impossible to run my mono's through a receiver?I'm asking because that would save me the expense of buying another pre and another amp. And I have a great Denon connection.
I'm not familiar with your pre however if it has the discrete 6 channel (FR, FL, SW, C, SR and SL) inputs similar to the back on the left side of the pre image above you should be ok. Of course it has to have the pre outs as well to accomodate the external amps for future expansions that you're thinking of. Hopefully this helps.
It has no connections for center, rear or subwoofer. I've using line-level connections for the sub.So if I used a A/V receiver I would be unable to use separate amps for the front speakers?
you'd be able to use separate amps for the front speakers as well as surrounds speakers if you do so desire.
Short answer...No. You are staying two channel & if you want music, stay that way.
Unfortunately, it's 5/2x the cost of a stereo setup. And you'd need a preamp/receiver which will accept 5/6 channel analog audio input or have the Denon propietary digital link (I forget the name) between properly configured Denon preamp and player.
