I am pretty happy with my current stereo that I use solely for music, but
in the future I plan on adding DTS surround sound to it. Do you guys with golden ears have two different stereos, one for music and one for surround, or do you just somehow (?) add a DTS preamp to your system. If so, how do you do this and if you only have a 2 channel amp, how do you power the rear and center channel speakers. Thanks for helping a newbie.
May not apply to you, but I got to start fresh;I bought a preamp/processor that specifically keeps the analog stereo input as analog and plays like a high quality music system. When the input is DD5.1 for HT then it goes digital and assumes five speakers/sub arrangement. One system, no hassle. Optimized for music quality but capable of REALLY good sound for movies. I am anticipating DD5.1 multichannel music soon too and will only have to buy the player (SACD or DVDA).
My system is in the archives here.
Depending on the cash flow you can buy a decent home theater amp and use the 2ch stereo mode when you listen to musicit's not blow your roof off performance however it will do the job for the average listener
my system
Sony STRDE-935 DD & DTS amp
Sony DVP 500 DVD
1 pair of technics fronts
1 pair of sound dynamics fronts
1 pair audio research surround
1 cerwin vega center channel
1 Paradigm PDR-12 Active subFor the average person who is 50% music and 50% movies (this is me) a system like this is fine. however for a person who's a little more into performance then you might want to consider different options.
Hope this helps.!
I have a seperate music and HT system that shares the same 2 channel speakers and two channel amp. I feel that in order to get the most from music a good 2 channel preamp and 2 channel amp is really necessary. I have done the HT setup for music and found it to be greatly lacking. Anyhow, all I do is run the front preamp outs from my HT preamp/processor into the aux input on my 2 channel preamp. When I want to use the HT, I select the aux input and set the volume level to 12:00 on the 2 channel preamp. If your 2 channel preamp does not have a unity gain feature (mine does not), then you will need to pick a fixed volume position on your 2 channel preamp. The fixed volume position is for HT calibration.Your amplification, I use a multi-channel amp (in combination with my 2 channel music amp) to power my center, rears and subwoofer for HT duities.
Hope this helps.
thanks!
