Run the standard audio right and left out into audio inputs you have spare (not phono) on the receiver. Hook the S-Video direct into your display. You may have to go through a menu or two to output Pro-Logic from your player instead of digital, but that's easy enough.

and this will de-code the dvd so the surround will work? If this is the case, what am I missing by not getting a new receiver?

  You will be missing 5.1 channel Dolby Digital or DTS. Pro Logic derives a phantom center and a a phantom rear channel from stereo material so what you are hearing are two real cahnnels and two derived channels (the rear channel may have two speakers but it is mono, not stereo). Plus, to my ears the Dolby Digital and DTS codecs are sweeter and more natural sounding than Pro Logic.

    what about the dvd player itself? do they make them with decoders so that you can have true 5.1?

      They do have DVD players with decoding built in (most I think actually). Problem is your receiver would not be able to use it. If you had a 5 channel receiver with 5 inputs (such as the Audio Refinement unit made a while back), you could have 5.1 sound. If you're looking for movie surround however you'd be just as well of buying a new receiver.
      I can't think of any way your present Pro-Logic receiver can output 5.1 sound though, no.

        Depending on your room size, you may want to go ahead with 6.1 or 7.1. Most receivers now probably include this, so if you are happy with 5.1 you could get a used one for a good deal.

        Receiver or AMP for L and R
        Another Receiver or amp for RRear, and L rear
        Another Amp or receiver for Center
        A powered Sub.
        I have the above set up using vintage amps ( receivers ) bought at tag sales for $ 20.00 each. Case in point Yamaha CR 420 for $ 15 .
        Plenty of Vintage speakers around also , cheap.
        You just have to adjust the volumes seperately, but it works fine.
