Here's the deal. I just bought a 32" LCD HD TV after many years with no TV. My intention is to use it to watch movies.Currently I have it hooked up to a two-channel system consisting of (I forget some specific models) Adcom GFA545 pre-amp, Adcom GFA545II Amp, and a pair of bookshelf KEF speakers. I also have a 12" klipsch sub which is currently in storage. Sometimes I swap the Adcom stuff for a Fisher 500C receiver which I keep trying to sell, but each time I hook it up I can't bear to let it go. Eventually I put the Adcom stuff back in since other people use my system.
Anyways, I really don't want to spend any real money, but I do want a 5.1 channel setup. I have two routes I can go. 1. Try to find an inexpensive dolby digital preamp, 3-channel power amp, and matching KEF center and rear speakers. OR 2. buy a cheap 5-channel receiver and some relatively inexpensive speakers and keep my two-channel system separate.
My priority is more on music than home theater. What would you do if you were in my shoes. Any recommendations on equipment who's quality defies it's inexpensive price? Thanks in advance!
Follow Ups:
I'd do the latter. On a budget I like Pioneer VSX 516K (7.1, lots of bells and whistles. Currently 179 at circuit city but watch for a better sale price. Last week it was $169.)
If you need more speaker pairs you could do worse than Best Buy Insignias at $50 the pair (sometimes cheaper--havent checked today).Pull out your Sub from storage and you are set!
Perhaps better than one might expect for the price?
I would choose one of my vintage receivers for stereo music.
Thanks! I already got the sub out. I noticed the Insignias at Best Buy and thought they looked unusually good for being so cheap. After reading all the reviews, I might give them a go. Can't lose much.
Since there is a 30 day return policy for whatever reason if you don't like them.I believe Circuity City has been selling Infinity speakers on the cheap that you may want to look into also.
I would build it around what you have already. If your pre-amp has HT bypass you could get a faily inexpensive receiver with 6 to 8 pre-outs and keep your 2 channel system as it is. I think Harmon Kardon or Pioneer might fit the bill. You may have a harder time finding a cheap HT pre-amp only. Of course you could buy a home theater in a box but you will most likely get what you pay for.
Thanks for your reply. I have a processor loop on the pre-amp. Would that work like HT bypass?
