I'm ready to start installing my HT after purchaseing a Denon AVR-3805. I already have my speakers, seven JBL 4301b which were formerly used in a local mall cinema. I plan to have the three front and two side surround speakers attached to large wooden beams useing heavy duty pro/studio mounting brackets. The two rear surround speakers will be mounted about 8-9' up on the rear wall. My sub will be a Velodyne ULD15. The room is about 19' wide, 25' long and roughly 13' high cathedral ceiling. Any idea if the receiver/speakers/sub will have adequate volume output for this size of a room? I have a second 15" sub if needed.
Follow Ups:
Two subs will make it easier to get a smoother distribution of bass in the room. I think there's some guides to sub positioning at UltimateAV Magazine online (or in SGHT back issues if you happen to have a collection).
then you can add separate amps if need be.If the Denons have any weakness it's in the amp stage. Every Denon AVR that I've owned has benefitted from adding an outboard power amp.
More than likely, unless the room is severely overabsorbent or you want to make a quick killing of your auditory receptors.
Cinema speakers are usually VERY efficient so as Kal says it is likely that you won't have a problem. You probably know this but try to set the speakers up so that they are equi-distant from the listening sweet spot (the receiver may be able to electronically adjust this if it can't be done geographically) and take particular care with the levels (i.e., all the main speakers should be at the same level and the sub should be lower in level so that it blends in a realistic way, rather than a boomy "Hey, I have a home theater!" manner), Happy viewing/listening.
rico,How much lower for the sub, assuming a 40 Hz crossover?
This is room dependent of course but mine is set 8db lower. It took me six months before I was satisfied. What I did was use endless loops of familar (i.e., non-explosive) sounds, like a car going over a small bridge, the sound of "space" in a symphony hall. the sound of a string bass in an acoustic setting, ets. When you get the 60-80 hz region right the real bottom should snap into place. Many of my listeners comment on the accuracy and naturalness of the bass and, yes, i can shake the rafters as well. And I am using a difficult combination, Magnepan 1.6 mains and a powered box subwoofer set at 40 hz..
Thanks, rico,I reset levels using Proceed's internal white noise generator, and had to raise the sub level substantially when I changed from 80 Hz to 40 Hz crossover to reach 0 re 80 dB SPL. A local audio expert who stopped by to listen thought the system sounded very good but that it was a shame not to let the KEF 104/2s handle the 80 - 40 range, given their reputation for tight well controlled bass. So I set my front LR speakers to large. The sub is a Velodyne HGS-15.
When I played a Reference HDCD recording of the Firebird, there seemed a bit too much LF, even though it was well controlled. The Proceed remote can boost or attenuate the sub (as well as center and rears) while you're listening. I'll try 8 dB attenuation as a starter.
Re the bass/sub that will take a bit of careful adjustment and lowering the level around -8db will be a good starting point. I have the sub set for 40hz but will give it a try at 60hz. Right now the L/C/R/SR/SL etc are all in temporary positions and mounting the speakers on the beams is my next step. The Denon AVR 3805 is fairly sophisticated re set up and with time I hope to get the speaker balance fine tuned after the speakers are in their permanent positions. The output is very decent with 5 speakers plus 1 sub with 2 more back surround speakers to be added and another sub. I'm compareing this against my prior 2 channel setup for video useing a pair of JBL L300 (15" woofers) and the surround speakers don't have quite the punch so far but I think I can get it closer.
