I am about start purchasing USED gear to assemble a
Home Theater System that also provides the best possible
2 channel audio playback. I play mainly classic rock and
80s music. I want to spend $800 for DVD/Redbook Player,
up to $1500 for a reciever or integrated amp, and up to
$1500 for stereo speakers. At first I will just be
running 2 channel mode. I am interested in the following:Onkyo SP1000 (For DVD and Redbook source)
B&K AVR-307 (Real Nice 5ch A/V Receiver under $1000 used)
B&W 802 Matrix S2 (Nice used speakers for Redbook)Any comments? I have read that Denon has poor redbook
performance hence the Onkyo but I am willing to hear
suggestions of better choices... The speakers may need
to change... I am not at all settled on what speakers to
look for... Again, I'll be buying all used gear...

You should look into an Arcam AVR300.You can find them used for $1200-1500. Great solution for music and HT. Sounds better than any other AVR receiver I've heard and you'd have to go to high quality separates (and more $$$) to beat it.
This is a 1st choice for music lovers. The Arcam AVR350 is a bit better if you have high end speakers, but it's more expensive, plus you're not going to find one used since it's relatively new to the market.
Hi,
if you don't have a big room, screw surround sound. You need to sit in the middle of an imaginary circle with the speakers around you on the cirlce. If you can't do that it sucks.Ok... you may have guessed I am doing HT in stereo. A sub is still a good idea. My TV has room for many inputs. I was worried about not having hi def switching on my HT pre/pro but it utrned out to be a non-issue.
I have hi def cable and my dvd running straight to the TV with room for
one more.Speakers are a matter of taste. I suggest (and it's only a suggestion)
going with theater speakers. They should have a flat freq response, where stereo speakers do not.
