I've tried progressive scan for the first time this week and once activated I can see horizontal lines of 'noise' around objects during rapid movement which isn't there during interlaced. Also, when watching 'Terminator 2' the progressive picture is less detailed and appears to soften the picture considerably, making fine detail appear slightly out of focus when compared to interlaced.
I'm viewing on a HD ready Panasonic Viera 42" plasma and am wondering if this modern display is revealing some limitation in the Toshiba which is quite dated so far as video technology goes.
Don't get me wrong, the interlaced video quality is superb and nothing to complain about, but I expected progressive to be a further step forward and am quite perplexed why it should be a step backwards instead.
Anyone know what's going on here?

Are you sure that the DVD player's settings are set correctly for progressive scan? Chaeck the manual yo see what you are supposed to do.
Yep - DVD player is easy to set to progressive scan once the DVD is stopped, and back again to interlaced; the screen does indicate 'progressive' and 'interlaced' when they are selected.
Your TV may just have a better de-interlacer than the DVD player.

You could be right - I've been reading an old review of the Toshiba where the progressive scan capability is criticised harshly.Soon be getting a decent upscaling Denon or Pioneer with HDMI so the Tosh can go in the bedroom system.
