....I see that the Toshiba 32HL66 is top rated in this month's Consumer Reports. It's available for about $1000. Seems like a more than fair price.
Anyone have any experience with this set or any other 32" recommendations?

I've heard the newer Sharp Aquos are excellent. I'm looking at the high end 32" model myself, though it's a bit over your price range (retails for around $1,200) I haven't demoed the exact model I'm looking for, but I've seen the others in the Aquos line and they show a very good picture, even under the harsh lighting at Costco and Best Buy.
If you want an LCD display that's a little bigger and both displays/accepts 1080p, then take a look at the 37" Westinghouse LVM-37m3. Shopko will have it on sale for $800 on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). You'll have to get up early and Shopko has to be in your area. The best price I could find on the net was $959, so that's a great price.I'd like to have one of these as a computer display and for video editing. It's a bit small for movies, TV watching, etc.

Try streetprices.com and bottomdollar.com for prices. Streetprices.com has that model for $799 + $82 in shiping. Remember to call American Express to confirm they still double the warranty or add an extra year to the one year factory warranty at no additional charge to you. When you buy a TV or appliance with them the manufacturer's 1 year warranty is is doubled to two years. I agree that bigger is better for HT. I was looking for a 61" Panny DLP that just came out in 2005. After doing searches I stumbled onto our current 60" Sony Grand Wega LCD. A really nice picture it has. The bottom line is the same set was $3,499 and 3599 at Sears. Best Buy, and Circuit City. We paid $1,749 for ours brand new in the box from Electronics Expo in NJ. They have both brick and mortar and internet sales. The shipping to our door was only $150. The only thing I bought was a generic stand that is very sturdy at CC for around $150 and it was easy to assemble. Take your time and go look at lots of different models. Then see what they sell for on-line. Watching Sunday and Monday night football in 720P is sweet. While many new sets claim 1080P the sad truth is the cable companies in my area at least at most offer 1080i. Go with the biggest set you can afford to buy is my humble suggestion. I have a 30" CRT HDTV in my bedroom. Good hunting and scrounging! John
If it isn't a tiny room, I'd go 40 or 42... Most brands and technologies have their strengths and weaknesses. Most are good enough that they would make you happy, but take some time and you can find one you'll really like. I think this is a largely personal matter. Some people get nuts
over Moire effect, others are bothered by overrich reds. I dislike motion artifacts.
I hear that this unit has an 8ms response time so I'm hoping that motion artifacts won't be a problem.I went with Amazon which has it for $999 with no tax or delivery change.
I'm reluctant to do business with a no-name internet seller.
Way too many horror stories.
I figure the extra $75-100 is what I'm paying for piece of mind.
FWIW, I ordered my Sony 42" plasma through Vanns.com and I have nothing but great things to say about them. Totally professional and reliable. Set came in 5 days exactly as promised.
Any of those internet electronics places with no physical address or an address in Brooklyn or even NYC (absent well know sellers like B&H Photo, J&R MUsic World, etc.) are to be avoided like the plague.
CU takes what 6 months or more to compile data and get their report out into print. I seriously doubt CU is on the cutting edge of home theater and HDTV's. They are not so hot on pc's, home audio, or digital cameras. Their top of the line washing machines choice a few years ago was a dog. A class action suit was filed against the manufacturer that CR said was so very good. I know because we own one but ours is still on extended warranty. Many people got burned badly. They are not so good on cars either imho. Many newer hdtv models will have appeared by the time they have finished compiling their reports and printed it out months after they started this project. If you read my above post on streetprices.com there are stores listed in NY/NJ with brick and mortar sites and internet sales that have lower prices. Whatever. I guess some people deserve to pay higher prices. Good luck! John
Hi,I was in the same boat as you are in about a month ago.
After some research I bought the Toshiba 32HL66. Owned it for two weeks and returned it to upgrade to the Sony KDL 32S2010. Why did I change. Well I was really not quite satisfied with what the tv did with some black shades. Individual objects were black but night sky scenes and even the top and bottom bars were more purple black than gray black. Also I thought some green colours were too flourescent.
The Sony was a bit better with the blacks and more accurate in colour portrayal but didn't think the picture was as sharp and vibrant. And the design of the tv frame made the tv screen appear smaller (illusion effect). The sound of the speakers were also not that good compared to the toshiba. Moot point if using a A/V receiver.
Now this brings me to my current set, the Samsung LNS3251D (black).
Better SD PQ, better blacks, higher resolution pic on HD, richer/vibrant pic and images appear more 3D. The tv looks great and is thinner than most.
Costs a bit more than the Toshbia but I felt it was worth it.
Also looked at Panasonic, JVC, LG and Sharp Aquos. Wished I could have spent more time with the Sharp but felt there blue colours were a bit off.
BTW the Samsung is a bit too red on some shades and I'm not sure professional ISF calibration can fix this.
Well this was a fun journey. When I eventually move into a bigger place I will be looking into Sony 1080p SXRD for screen size 50" and above.
Thanks for the feedback.I went with the Toshiba entirely on the weight of the Consumer reports top rating.
CU does a lot of things well and a few not so great. My experience has been that their TV ratings are where they really shine.
I guess we'll see.
Thanks again.
G’day,I can’t comment on the price but the new Toshiba has the best picture of ANY LCD screen I have seen.
I have seen the 32”, 37”, 42” & 47” and they are all excellent.
I am considering the 42” to replace a 4 year old 42” plasma in my bedroom system.
If you are happy with the price I’d say “go for it” because I have yet to see a better LCD.
Good luck.
Smile
