...Can anyone tell me the exact viewing area in square inches of a 27" 4:3 compared with a 32" 16:9?
Is there any general formula?

Is square inches what you're really looking for? You might want to approach this from another direction: image size for movies. If you have a 4:3 display and want to know the size of the 16:9 display needed to show a 1.78:1 image the same size as the 4:3 display shows it , here's a way to calculate it:
In my experience maintaining or increasing your current screen height when moving from 4:3 to 16:9 is beneficial especially if viewing 4:3 images"unstretched" on the new 16:9. Check the vertical and horizontal screen measurements on the respective web sites for the display sizes. By the way the correct determination for diagonal measurement is the square root of (height squared plus width squared).
In theory, 27" unit will be 21.60 x 16.20, 32" will be 27.89 x 15.69"
A squared plus B squared = C squared works.
I used AutoCAD and quickly sketched it (about 2 minutes).
