Mostly, what do you consider not expensive? $300, $1500...?
What speakers are you hooking this up to?
Assume you're referring to a receiver, not an "amp" (you don't mention a pre/pro so I'd assume this is correct)?
How big is your room?
How loud do you like to listen?
Do you have any brands you are fond of?

Hi Grant, great questionsInexpensive to me is under $300.00 (three daughters in college)
I am using Stromberg-Carlson Custom 400 coax in corner horns for the L and R front, a Radioshack 12something in a backloaded horn for the center, two DuKane hallway style PA speakers for the rear L and R, and a KLH powered sub. It is all vintage stuff in great shape (except for the KLH which is new).
I am so new to the HT thing, I don't know if I need a per/pro, or amp, or reciever.
My room is 22 x 32 with half the walls all glass.
I don't listen really load.
I have no favorites as I don't know any of this equipment.
For that price range, it'll be a receiver. You may want to look into the new digital units (such as Panasonic) as your speakers are all likely high sensitivty and you won't need much power. I have not heard one myself, only what I've read here indicates they are nice for the money.
Other options; Denon, Yamaha.... etc
