What you need is a preamp with home theater bypass. When you use two channel you can leave the home theater receiver off. When you use the home theater you use the bypass on the preamp wich will basicly send the left/right from the receiver through the preamp to the power amp.

I have this exact combination your referring to. I'm currently utilizing an Adcom GFP750 (with a processor bypass switch) as well as my Adcom GFA5800 amp and Yamaha RXV3200 receiver. I'm using the Yamaha as a processor and to drive my center and rear channels and with a push of a button I can be listening to two channel music without compromise, however I do get some noise from my TV cable which of course is the dreaded 60cycle hum and my amp is not very fogiving as it amplifies that as well. Otherwise, it's the best of both worlds.
I haven't looked into preamps in years. Is this a common feature on current quality preamps?
It does seem to be a common feature on newer preamps. Another way to intergrate home theater without changing preamps is to have a dvd player with 6 to 8 anolog outs. That way you could run the left/right outs from the dvd player to to the preamp. My Marantz dv8400 is set up this way. Of course this would be a pain as far as volume adjustment but in theory would work. You would also need a home theater receiver with 6 or 8 anolog inputs.
