Sorry, I really don't know enough to really ask the question. The film I had in mind was a UK not available in Region 1. I was wondering if the signal out put to a Region 1 recorder would accept it. I mean, the television doesn't know the difference, right?

And so does the DVD recorder.If the movie is in the PAL format, it's based on 25 frames (50 fields) per second. If the movie is in the NTSC format, it's based on 30 frames (60 fields) per second. In order for everything to sync up (ie, actually work), everything needs to be running at the same speed.
NTSC is about 525 lines (around 480 dedicated to the actual picture). PAL is about 625 lines (around 575 dedicated to the actual picture).
If it's on a UK DVD, then it's most likely in the PAL format and a Region 1 DVD recorder would not convert it. If you really want the movie, your least expensive route would be to find someone with a "region free" DVD player that had a decent PAL-to-NTSC converter and record the resulting NTSC output. You can also search online for a PAL-to-NTSC external converter, but these run from $150 - $250. That's a bit much to watch one movie. The other option is the computer route, but that's not an option that you mentioned.
If I understand correctly, Oppo's are region free so maybe I should just spring for one of those and not worry about it.
