Glad you like your set. I do wish cablecards worked better, Comcast couldn't get one to work for me. Cable companies clearly do not care for them which is a pity, since at least on paper they are nice. If you want to wait out the format war, get yourself a decent upscaling player, perhaps the Oppo.

Jack, which OPPO model do you own?
I have the original 971H. The other ones may (or may not) be better, but I haven't seen them in action. I use the Oppo for its region-free abilities, and use my HD DVD player, a much better upconverter, for most DVD viewing.

The problem with CableCards is that the manufacturer of the cable card builds them to a spec. The manufacturer of the TV set also builds them to a spec. It's like two different companies building a bridge. Each starts with a set of blueprints and begins on opposite sides of the river and then hopes that they will actually meet in the middle and fit perfectly. I have a 50" SXRD and it has a cablecard installed and I have not had a single drop out in the year I have been using it. I'd bet against the cable operator every time when it comes to drop outs.
They literally could not get one to work for me, and they didn't know how to fix it. I ended up canceling the order (I now have the coax going right to the TV). I'm not the only one who has had problems. I won't do a cable box. Sometime this year, Verizon will be bringing FIOS to my area, and *if* they can get a cablecard to work, I'm going to dump Comcast.

Thanks Jack,You appear to be a pretty active member here and have an informative insight as do some others. I originally signed up on AA around 6 or 7 years ago when Hi-rez (SACD/DVD Audio) was really starting to take hold. Now it's another (for all practical purposes) dead format. I'm waiting for HD music and hoping it's a format that sticks. As for the cablecard issue, my carrier is Brighthouse; they've been pretty good, but everyone that I talk with there admits that the cablecards suck, when the tech came out and tried swapping out the card about a 8 mos ago or so the dropouts became worse and as a matter of fact the picture wouldn't even come back on in some cases, I would have to completely reset everything; so I had him bring back my old card and it's been working pretty good other than the occasional DO's. They seem to appear more readily at certain times of the year, most likely due to atmospherics and wx conditions. I think overall the cablecard is a great way to go if they could all agree on a standard, that'll never happen.
