I just purchased a Monster Cable HTS 3500 for a modest HT I am putting together. I will have an HDTV feed from DirecTV. Should I go straight into the HD receiver with the coax from the dish, or should I loop it into the conditioner first? My common sense tells me that simpler is better and I shouldn't add anything unnecessary to the mix. Or would the 3500 actually improve things?

IMO anything in the path of ANY signal is going to equate to some signal loss and it's going to come down to how much is too much for you. I used to use a small inline filter to help remove 60hz hum from my cable coax and it definately helped, but I felt like I was loosing some of the signal strength and chose to remove it. I also use a Vansevers Clean Line to clean up the AC; which has no coax inputs; this unit definately helps with the audio portion of my system. I think you should weight out the lesser of two evils; view it both ways and make the decision for yourself. As far as protection goes, I would want the most protection I could get for my dish. It most definately should be well grounded (to the ground) and having the HTS3500 will also "help" in the protection, but if you have a direct or near direct hit, well, there's really not much that can withstand lightening hits.
