Is the movie theatre presentation of a film the standard against which we judge the HD presentation in our homes? I have just seen two films in movie the theatres: Casino Royal and Flags of our Father. Aside from the artistic value, the video quality is no better than my Sony XRB2 LCD.
Standard definition content on CRTs were no match for the movie theatre experience. However, is there merit to the argument that wide screen high definition sets are now competitive with movie theatre presentations?
Follow Ups:
Once upon a time, a lot of effort was put into projecting the best picture possible...but it seems that no one cares anymore. I have been theatres where the film is clearly out of focus. I often complain, but with little effect.HOWEVER, under the best conditions, 70mm or IMAX done by a theatre that cares, will crush and destroy ANY video display. Before it was closed one movie palace still used carbon arc to generate the white light. Saw a couple of the Star Wars movies there. Nothing can compete with a scree that is over 60 wide!
Adams Family Values is the real torture test for any video display. In a theatre, you can see EVERY detail, which are mostly variations in black (assuming they do their job right in the theatre). On a video display, a lot of the detail is lost.
got the same in the UK
imax seems to be the only place that cares about the image anymore.
My local Warners (now Vue) can't focus a film to save their lives.
I am glad to hear this. My three daughters are home from university and we have seen many films in the theater in the past two weeks and I thought I was loosing my sight. The pictures were blurry and I thouhgt it COULD NOT be the projectionist, it had to be my eyes. Cheers.
