Out Christmas shopping again today, and one of the local Sears stores had a really nice Blu-ray demo set-up; just like the ones you see at Best Buy and I'm sure at Circuit City, only this one wasn't using a Sony 40"XBR 3LCD nor a Samsung LCD unit, but a 50" SXRD XBR LCos set and the picture was stunning, I couldn't stop looking to see if I could pick up any visual anomalies, glitches or artifacts or anything; nada! I was intranced, after staring intently while watching preview from Ultraviolet, Open Season, Corpse Bride, Superman etc..., when I asked the sales guy how much they were asking for the BDPS1; because I thought that maybe they might be offering a promotional price; yeah, he said; "list price", I don't think so. Now that I've have my 60" SXRD XBR I'm ready for the player; I knew this would happen. I'm not sure I can restrain myself. I buy all of my equipment from a buddy of mine that I've known for at least 16 years at Sound Advice/Tweeter and I'm sure he would work up a sweet deal on the Sony unit especially as hungry as they are for a fat Christmas sales bonus (I'm guessing around $749ish)and I'm not sure I can wait...hey I've got a 60 day trial period if all else fails, right? I most likely wouldn't return it...

...that always happen to a new format. Also the movies are way too pricy now and probably not now or ever going to be easy to rent. I hope so,I work 300 yards from the Sears Blu-Ray demo and think its nice too.

Netflix has both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs to rent. As for pricing, Amazon sells HD DVDs for about 30% off, plus an additional 10% off as a 1 year promotion, so I pay $18 for HD DVDs (not combos), tax free, free shipping. That's not too bad, and I assume the situation is similar for Blu-ray discs at Amazon.
There are lots of reasons not to buy into the new formats, but lack of rentals and price of discs aren't amoung them.

I am also looking at Blu-ray and HD-DVD players and I am considering getting the Sony SXRD KDS60A2000 TV. I wish I had enough cash for the 60" XBR2 you have but I don't. See my post below on the poor upscaling performance of the Sony Blu-ray player on SD DVDs. That is totally unacceptable. Maybe the second generation player will have a fix for that after CES.
AT HE2006 in LA Sony had a 70" SXRD RP driven by a Blu-ray source. It was indeed stunnig.
The Sonys are rarely discounted, it seems to be their policy. If you do a search online, you can find them lower. BTW, you do know that they are really made by Pioneer. Amazon has the Samsung for $600, just make sure it has the latest firmware (downloadable if needed). I've toyed with the idea of getting a BD player, to go with my HD DVD player, but between the fact that there are only 10BD exclusive titles I would buy, and the price of stand alone players is rather high. PS3 isn't an option for me-its butt ugly and has no remote.
You may wish to consider an HD DVD player, half the price, and one day blu-ray players will catch up to them PQ wise.

Jack,Where have you seen the lowest price on the Sony BDP-S1 on the internet? Best I've found was around $839. I believe I can get it for around $749 from my buddy. The PS3 is not a bad option as well, but I just can't get past the thought of not have a true Audo/Video dedicated piece as "sound" quality if very important to me while listening to CD's as well as this would most likely become my primary unit. The BDP-S1 utilizes discreet circuitry this is what I believe would set it apart from the PS3. IMO it would just be impossible to house Sony's Cell Broadband Engine AND the Blu-ray technologies together while maintaining great A/V (more Audio) while staying below the MSRP of $999 (like the BDP-S1) for the unit. I agree it would be kind of nice to have a game system/pc-internet/BD player all in one; plus the addtion of HD music (supposedly) early spring 2007, but I've become spoiled. Hey, look at my history; I bought the Sony 9000es as soon as it hit the street and I still love it today. Do you believe that the PQ in HD-DVD bests that of the Blu-ray?? hmmm. I've not heard this...my understanding is that both formats appear to be identical with the exception of course of the capacity of BD's.
I did a search a while back, and found it at DVDcity for $800. There are several things you should know. The Sony (and Pioneer) Blu-ray players do NOT play CDs. The PS3 does, but does NOT upscale DVDs.None of the Blu-ray players support advanced audio codecs at this point.
The Samsung, now discontinued, is supposed to be reasonably good with the upgraded firmware.
Yes, I beleive that HD DVD bests Blu-ray PQ wise. Most people who own both prefer HD DVD. Despite its supposedly "superior technology" and greater storage capacity (Sony needs it for ineffecient codecs), the absolute BEST it can do, is be as good as HD DVD. For that, they charge twice the price. You can get the HD A2 for less than $500 and you can even get the XA1 (1st gen) for $500 now.
HTH,
Jack
PS. here's the link-they are having server problems today, try later.
Jack,I'm not completely with you on your position of PQ and yes, I'm very tired of new technology format wars, "bureaucratic BS". I have in my posession a fantastic Marantz Laserdisc player and Sony SACD player. Good thing that my DVD/SACD player functions mainly as my DVD (and CD player for the matter) player. I thought it was crazy when I realized my 9000es didn't play CDR's and I thinks it's ludacris that the BDPS1 doesn't play CD's! I just spoke to my sales friend and told him when they're marked down the Sony's to $399 I'll buy one and it should be fairly soon (like March) since the 2nd gen stuff will be trickling in. He also told me that the first customer that bought one of the BDP1's returned it because it wouldn't play CD's. I'll most likely wait for the upgraded HD music units. Jack, which Samsung model are you refering to being disco'd already?
There's only one Samsung Blu-ray player. The Sony will not play any of the interactive discs (ie BD-J), and will not play CDs. AFAIK, it isn't upgradable at all. Also be aware, that except for the Sammy, none of the Blu-ray players will pass BTB.

The PS3 remote is out in Japan already and it will be in the US very soon, if not now. For those that can't wait, the Japanese remote works on the US PS3. The manual is in Japanese and the letters/words are in Japanese, of course. Can't help you with the players asthetics: to each his/her own.
EB Games and GameStop are now selling the new PS3 remote.

You said "...and has no remote." -- nothing about universal remotes. Besides, there's nothing stopping one of the IR/RF remote makers from making a sensor to plug into one of the PS3's USB ports. Bluetooth problem solved.
.
Look for a Sony PS3 (60GB version, don't get the 20GB version).Because of what Sony packed into this product, it is getting better by the firmware updates and currently equals or betters stand-alone players. Coming in March '07 will be several more updates, one of which should be decoding of DTS-HD Master Audio (it already decodes Dolby TrueHD) and possible enhancements to its SACD playback.
Oh, I almost forgot: not only is it an evolving player, it's $599.
