I did a search a while back, and found it at DVDcity for $800. There are several things you should know. The Sony (and Pioneer) Blu-ray players do NOT play CDs. The PS3 does, but does NOT upscale DVDs.None of the Blu-ray players support advanced audio codecs at this point.
The Samsung, now discontinued, is supposed to be reasonably good with the upgraded firmware.
Yes, I beleive that HD DVD bests Blu-ray PQ wise. Most people who own both prefer HD DVD. Despite its supposedly "superior technology" and greater storage capacity (Sony needs it for ineffecient codecs), the absolute BEST it can do, is be as good as HD DVD. For that, they charge twice the price. You can get the HD A2 for less than $500 and you can even get the XA1 (1st gen) for $500 now.

PS. here's the link-they are having server problems today, try later.

Jack,I'm not completely with you on your position of PQ and yes, I'm very tired of new technology format wars, "bureaucratic BS". I have in my posession a fantastic Marantz Laserdisc player and Sony SACD player. Good thing that my DVD/SACD player functions mainly as my DVD (and CD player for the matter) player. I thought it was crazy when I realized my 9000es didn't play CDR's and I thinks it's ludacris that the BDPS1 doesn't play CD's! I just spoke to my sales friend and told him when they're marked down the Sony's to $399 I'll buy one and it should be fairly soon (like March) since the 2nd gen stuff will be trickling in. He also told me that the first customer that bought one of the BDP1's returned it because it wouldn't play CD's. I'll most likely wait for the upgraded HD music units. Jack, which Samsung model are you refering to being disco'd already?
There's only one Samsung Blu-ray player. The Sony will not play any of the interactive discs (ie BD-J), and will not play CDs. AFAIK, it isn't upgradable at all. Also be aware, that except for the Sammy, none of the Blu-ray players will pass BTB.
