In Reply to: What is the purpose of a pre-amp.? posted by ZE on March 21, 2000 at 14:43:43:
Eric J is correct, your reciever has a pre-amp built in along with a tuner and an amplifier. The pre-amps function is to take the very small voltages from the tuner, phono cartridge, or whatnot and amplify them a sufficient amount so that the power amp has enough juice to work with. A good, clean pre-amp is important because the power amp will amplify everything it receives from the pre-amp, including noise and distortion.
thanks people!!
