In Reply to: Trouble with Component Input...??? posted by Frank A on February 14, 2007 at 19:08:19:
#1 Try a different (lighter) set of cables.#2 If the cables don't do it, it will probably be the video input board. It sounds like a good connection is made because you initially get a picture, but then the board or the pins move and vital connections are broken (is that MonsterCable connection too heavy?)
#3 It could also be the electronic video circuitry going out.
Follow Ups:
Joe,Thanks for your reply. I don't think the cables are too heavy. Comcast actually supplied them with the unit. I think the component video #2 input is more consistent. The #1 component input is giving me more trouble. Do you think I could get a plug-in board from Hitachi to fix the problem? Maybe it's a bad component on the input board?
Do you think it could be the Monster Cable component wiring harness? That's why I asked.
MonsterCable connections are usually very tight. They require a bit more elbow grease ro get on and taking them off requires more than just a casual tug. If they've been on and off of those component connections a few times, it's probably the case that the actual pins that connect to the video board are now loose (dislodged due to the tug-of-war the cables induce). When the cables are first put on, the pins get pushed back in their respective holes. After a short time, the weight of the cables pulls them from their position on the video board.
You may want to open up the back of the display to see what goes on when the cables are pushed on and then watch what happens after that.
Of course, I could be wrong and the ICs on the video board are going out and stop working after the display warms up. Hope you can fix it or get the issue corrected, because it sounds like something that would seriously annoy me to the point of pulling a Chev Chelios with my display (if you saw Crank, you'll know exactly what I mean).
Hi Joe,I did a little more experimenting with the inputs and found that the component jacks on "Input 2" seem to be the faulty ones. So I switched the TV to the better component "Input 1," and I don't seem to be having the problem.
I then switched the DVD player to S-Video (rather than component) on the suspect Input 2 and the problem seems solved with only a slight decrease in picture sharpness when watching a DVD. For now I can live with that.
What is also annoying is that Comcast's Motorola HD box only gives you the extra program information, volume adjustment and program Guide on the Component output. If you use the S-Video or the Composite output you have no On-Screen Menu. That is another reason I had to make sure that the Motorola Box was hooked up to the good component input.
I know I can hook the two component inputs to my HT receiver and then back to the good TV component input(switching them at the receiver instead of the TV) and I may do that in the future, but of course I'll need an extra component cable for that and my cable jungle will thicken. I think I will also call Hitachi and see if they have any helpful suggestions for getting that input working again.
Hey, thanks for all your insights and helpful suggestions.
