I am going to wall mount a 720p LCD flat screen and intend to serve it from a local dvd player (component video) and HDMI source from a remote 4x2 switch. The HDMI feed with be either a 1080p player in our adjacent theater or cable/direct tv/dish network. Here's my question. The HDMI feed will contain video AND audio information but I don't want to use the flat screen's speakers...rather external speakers driven by a pretty good amplifier. Will I have to run separate audio cables from my theater AVR or remote cable box or can I in some way take audio outs (RCAs) from the flat screen? I probably should know this but your feedback would be much appreciated.

Thank you gentlemen. My B&K doesn't have HDMI capability so sounds like I'll be running analogue (maybe digital, not sure) to my flat screen amplifier, old Hafler pre and power amps. My HDMI swithcher will be have 2 outputs for two tvs, my front projection and I thought, the flatscreen. I guess I can run the HDMI out for video but not audio. Thanks again for taking time to respond.
Most flat screens have audio outputs but you'd be better off taking it from your DVD/cable/satellite source from either the analog or digital outputs (assuming that your AVR does not have an HDMI input but does have digital inputs) and skip having to run the audio signal through your display.
The simplest approach, if you have an AVR that does HDMI switching and can accept audio from its HDMI input, is to route the signal through the AVR. My Denon 2807 handles that approach very well and it does not pass the audio signal to the TV unless you choose to have it do so in the setup menus. If you don't have an AVR that provides that functionality, then you're going to have to run a separate audio feed to your AVR/amplifier or use an external switch box. If you use an external HDMI switch box, a lot depends on what switching capabilities it provides. If it has only 1 HDMI out, that is going to be to the TV and you're going to have to run a separate audio feed from the source to the AVR/amp. If it has a second HDMI out, you could run that to your AVR/amp if it has HDMI inputs.
You may well be able to take the audio from the TV's audio outs and run that to your AVR/amp but the audio outs from the TVs I've seen are 2 channel and that won't work particularly well for you if you're using a surround sound system because you're going to lose the separation between some channels in the process and then use something like Dolby ProLogic in one of it's several varieties to recreate multi-channel surround info. Better to run multi-channel info directly from the source to the AVR/amp if the source has multi-channel analog outs.
