I have a 720p display, aging (non-HDMI) DD/DTS pre/pro and "only" a 5.1 audio system. PS3 video looks awesome on this display but I'm limited to plain-jane DD/DTS over optical. The LG looks like it'll give me an awesome picture but with 5.1 DTS-HD analog sound which is pretty good; Except it has no 7.1 analog audio support and it may be years before I have an HDMI-capable pre/pro or Receiver. My wishlist includes outstanding Blu-Ray,(HD-DVD? and upscaled DVD video plus HDMI 1.3 compliance and 7.1 analog outputs which supports all audio Codecs (downgradable to 5.1 for current setup). Is there any current player which matches this wishlist today (or perhaps in the near-future) ?
Follow Ups:
Oscar,I think the Sony BDP-1 is worth the money. It is exceptionally well made and it looks beautiful also. This wouldn't mean much if it wasn't a good performer, which it is.
The appeal of better audio for HT is strong, but not that strong. I think it all hinges on HDMI components and until the manufacturers get their ducks in a row and a good preamp is offered, I'll live with DD/DTS over optical.

Immediate gratification will be costly; PS3 or unfutureproofed-universal LG with hi-rez audio analog outs for twice the price or ?Part of the equation could be (premature?) rumors of HD-DVD's demise....
The success of Casino Royale blu-ray should make it pretty clear to everyone that HD-DVD is on the way out. What is CR BD on Amazon...#7 now? Pretty amazing.

i haven't seen this movie in the theatres yet, so i may get this on BD disc.
It's a reference quality 1080P transfer with uncompressed PCM audio. Even though I can't take full advantage of either, it is the best quality picture I've seen on my system and sounds pretty detailed too. The postproduction of the film does subdue some colors and emphasize others, but it is rather subtle (compared to, say, O Brother Where Art Thou) and I don't mind the effect. The vignette before the credits role, showing how Bond got his double-0 license to kill, is black and white. A fairly classy intro.A few words about the movie, since you haven't seen it. Casino Royale is a return to page 1 and a return to the basics while also bringing Bond into the electronics age and digital revolution. Gone are the frills, silly gadgets, fancy weapons, drawn out car chases, boring boat chases, plane chases, all replaced by good old fashioned foot chases with stunts and sheer physical prowess that was actually riveting. Gone are the inept plans to dispose of Bond, replaced with a jaw-clenching torture scene that shows you another side of Craig's approach to the role.
The acting and plot were a step up from the average action film, as Craig did a good job underacting and handling the gritty, violent duties. The screenplay stayed somewhat true to the Ian Flemming. Even the bad guy did a good job with his "evil genius card player" LeChiffre character who bleeds from his eye. An extremely annoying bad guy in the hands of a different actor, but it was done right in Casino Royale.
Don't go in with unreasonable expectations and you will enjoy it if you're in the mood for action and violence. It's definitely the best James Bond film since the Sean Connery era, and maybe the best ever. Get it. If nothing else, the 1080P graphics during the opening credits and the subsequent foot chase scene at a construction site are alone worth the cost of the disc.

thanks for "pushing me off the edge" :- )I ordered "The Departed" together with CR.
I am coming to san francisco end of April. you guys around that area?
I'm a big Scorcese fan, but dislike DeCrapio and hope he'll stop appearing in Scorcese's work. Still, I'm tempted to get Departed. Do you recommend it?I'm tempted to get Bullitt and The Great Escape, too.
I am in the SF bay area, if you want to hook up next month, that will be do-able.
