Suggestion,As you've moved off the 'grid' and are focusing on free over the air broadcast, you would might consider the following if you want to get full 1080hd:
- Pick up a used Zenith HDR420 (pulls in digital signals better than all others and about $150 used)
- Radio Shack part#15-1171 Cable bi-directional amplifier 15DB gain (about $30)
Zenith Silver Arrow Antenna (for indoor convenience but attaching to the outdoor is even better about $10-15 on ebay)
For the large roof antenna I would strongly recommend setting up your ariel with an antenna rotator. These are great because best reception coordinates for one channel may not be the same for another. Radioshack does carry these but I don't know the current cost. I bought mine many years ago (when I was still using a roof antenna) for about $50.Implement the above and you'll have a decent choice of excellent public TV stations and all the locals; most of which broadcast in hi-def. If your TV is not HD ready, then splash out about $300 bucks or so for an excellent Sony 36" Tube TV people are frequently selling these days.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the tips...turns out I'm getting good signal strength and all the channels I want are broadcast from the tower up north. No need for bidirectional capabilities to pick up the Monterey channel and others I will never watch.
