I am considering purchasing a Sunfire Theater Grand Pre/Pro instead of the Parasound 2500 or the Classe SSP 25. Appreciate any feedback regarding these units. Thanks.
Know this isn't one of your choices, but wanted to suggest you give the Proceed AVP a chance if it's in your price range. I really liked the analog pass through, and also found it was quite user friendly. In my case, I also was swayed by its ability to hook up to my Citation Dual Drive dipoles, which is very rare, given that the Citation line has been cancelled (or, at least, that's what my old Citation dealer told me last month).Good luck.
Oh, one other thing. Might also check out which of the preamp/pros have Dolby Ex, and of course, 5.1 analog input capabilities. The Proceed doesn't, but its been out for a couple of years.
I think the Classe' outperforms both pre/pros. Build quality is higher as well. Just my thoughts. Good luck!
There are reviews and info here in the archives on these brands. I have listened to the Sunfire and Classe and am buying the Classe because the analog passthrough audio sounds much better. There is a logic to why it SHOULD sound better because it is not A/D and D/A processed; but the result is audible to me. Kinda hard to tell the difference in HT, to be honest. The source is pretty low fi on movies. Well, that's an exaggeration, the blasts and booms and fun stuff is cool on everything (even Rotel). The dialog should be a differentiator but I couldn't hear it. Price is about the same. Haven't heard the Parasound, but it does digital on analog audio, so I wasn't interested after the above test. I'll bet it's hard to find one dealer with all three brands, isn't it?
Thanks Bob H. for your comments. I was almost ready to purchase a Lexicon MC1 until I read several articles in Widescreen magazine written by Richard Hardesty. He really convinced me that there are other units that offer much better stereo music production: Proceed, Theta, Classe and even the Parasound was well rated. I am leaning towards the Classe...kind of expensive but well rated by many people. Thanks again.
Ron,The one issue you might want to pay attention to is the bass management. It depends on how you want to classify your speakers and how you want to integrate the subwoofer.
Many people complain that the standard 80Hz crossover doesn't really match well with their speakers and subwoofer.
Just something to think about. The Theta CasaNova, Meridian 561, 565, and the Lewxicon's at least give you some flexibility in this area (even for stereo from a digital source like CD)
