So I got my Motorola DCT3416 High Def DVR from Time-Warner cable. It's the latest and greatest HD DVR with 160 Gig HD, HDMI output, etc.I'm using an HDMI-DVI cable to my 60" Sony Grand Wega III, and the picture quality is not quite what I want. Sure, I expected the compressed SD channels to look bad, and it does, just like the previous Moxi HD DVR or 811 HD receiver from DISH, but the brightness and contrast seem too low even with HD channels compared to those other HD receivers I've had.
I had to turn up the brightness, contrast, sharpness significantly higher to arrive at similar bright/sharp PQ as other receivers. Even then, I think the PQ is still a bit murky and dark. Anyone else?
Follow Ups:
Hi Jon:I just switched from Directv to Comcast and use their Moto HD DVR. Running it with component cables I find the contrast and brightness quite high. In fact, when there is some fine font writing on the screen with white background it seems the contrast or picture is too high, even hair highlights seem exagerated or too shimmery in some HD scenes.
Try hooking it up with a cheap component cable and see what happens. Maybe my cheap cable is my problem of too hot of a pic. I will experiment with some others to see.
But that's exactly what I expect. On every device I've ever owned, the component output was always way brighter than HDMI/DVI output, not a little bit but a LOT.The video transmission standards of analogue (component) and digital (HDMI/DVI) are obviously different. Once I compensate for the amount of brightness, though, digital connection usually has better PQ.
If you're really considering a different DVR, I highly recommend the TiVo Series3 which has a 300 gig hard drive.
