Hi Jon:I just switched from Directv to Comcast and use their Moto HD DVR. Running it with component cables I find the contrast and brightness quite high. In fact, when there is some fine font writing on the screen with white background it seems the contrast or picture is too high, even hair highlights seem exagerated or too shimmery in some HD scenes.
Try hooking it up with a cheap component cable and see what happens. Maybe my cheap cable is my problem of too hot of a pic. I will experiment with some others to see.

But that's exactly what I expect. On every device I've ever owned, the component output was always way brighter than HDMI/DVI output, not a little bit but a LOT.The video transmission standards of analogue (component) and digital (HDMI/DVI) are obviously different. Once I compensate for the amount of brightness, though, digital connection usually has better PQ.
