Will my 400+ DVDs--mastered of course in 480I--and played on a progressive DVD player--that INTERPOLATES the image to 480P--look better on a, say, 1080P TV--that INTERPOLATES the image to 1080--or will the latter merely expose the low-res signal's warts?I just bought a 1080P TV and my answer to the 'look better' question is HELL YES!!!!!!!!!! The TV is a Samsung 67" RPTV, DLP-type, with 1080P resolution. Wow do my old DVDs look great.*
I'm thrilled. One thing I'm increasingly convinced of--I'm NOT joining the format war--I won't buy a hi-def DVDP until the dual-format machines are in their 2nd generation.
.* The few that do not look better, such as A&E's Horatio Hornblower series, were recorded in standard 4-by-3 480I and truncated to 16:9. The HH movies are very soft looking.

Follow Ups:
Thx, Jack G--received my DVE. I must be getting use to receiving and adjusting TVs that are too bright, contrasty, colored, edgy, etc. I had adjusted the Saunsung subjectively long before I received DVE. Turns out the only things I changed were 'sharpness', which was at 10 (of 100) and now is zero, and brightness (black level), which I had too low. (I'd rather see about nothing in the really dark scenes rather than seeing glaringly bright scenes [= light-gray blacks].)The Sansung overscans less than I thought--only 2 - 3% laterally and about 4% vertically.
I'm almost ashamed, however, to admit to joining the format war* by ordering an HD-XA1, the top-of-the-2-years-ago-line Toshiba HD-DVDP (whew!). I was surprised to learn that most HD-DVDPs do not have 6-channel analog outputs, which I must have for my otherwise-all-analog system. I decided NOT to spend lots of money at this point, as I'm still waiting for that 2nd-generation dual-format player**; the XA1 was only $394 delivered to me, and it's supposed to be brandnew, sealed in factory box, etc.
Have ordered 9 HD-DVDs thru Amazon, some used and quite affordable. We'll see!
.* I react to Sony's greed the same way I react to Microsoft's greed--I consider both bullies and I try to avoid them.
** I see that Samsung has announced one.

Ah yes, overscanning. My Sony SXRD overscans by about 2 1/2% both directions. As for settings, most people tend to have the sharpness waaaaay too high-mine's pretty low now.
Which discs did you get? I've got about 45, with more on pre-order. You are going to need to upgrade the firmware of your XA1. Some of the newer titles won't play on it until you do. You need Firmware 2.0 or 2.1.
enjoy,
Jack
...'We Were Soldiers', arguably the finest Vietnam-war movie; 'U-571'; 'The Fugitive'; 'The Getaway' with Steve McQueen; 'Gran Prix'; 'Million Dollar (sic) Baby'; 'The Searchers', one of my favorite John Wayne movies; 'The Matador'; 'Serenity' (I LOVED the series 'firefly', which I didn't know existed until I bought the DVDs), 'Syriana', and 'Jarhead'.I already own SD DVDs of 6 of these, but 5 will be new to my movie collection, and I've never seen 'Syriana'.
I already own in SD-DVD eleven more movies released in HD-DVD, but I have to see at least some of the 1st eleven before I order more.

Good list, but I'll warn you that the Fugative isn't that hot. Warner botched a couple of their early titles, that being one of them. I have a few of the others, you'll like them, especially Serenity:-). Did you upgrade your Firmware?
Enjoy,
Jack
NO HD movies until **Denon** makes a dual format player :D

...which I loved the original series...I believe *were* actually shot in WS and cropped 4:3 and blown up for TV release. (See the doc where the production team is looking at footage in 16:9 on WS equipment). So if they didn't use original elemnet then we got a blow up of a blow up or the world's worst tranfer. HH is in sore need of remastering, which I guess will never come.I'm thrilled to read that most DVDs look good - this gives me hope!
.......I have hundreds of DVD’s and I don’t want to replace them until HD discs are plentiful and then only if they are far better than the DVD’s.Also, nearly as important as the screen is a decent DVD player. I have a 55” plasma that can do 1080i (not 1080p) and with my top-of-the-line pioneer (216MHz chip) most DVD’s look brilliant. However, when I hook up a DVD player with a 54MHz chip the picture is only “ok”. I am thinking of getting the new Denon DVD 3930 as my next purchase for my HT rig. I do have my eye on a 65” 1080p plasma but I feel it won’t be too long before the price drops substantially on it.

I've got something like 900 DVDs, and they do look better on a 1080p set. The exception for me, is Jet Li's "Once Apon a Time in China" trilogy, which has so much edge enhancement, its unwatchable.
Enjoy,
Jack
Absolutely, some are worse than others, but I haven't seen any of mine that looked bad--lucky, I guess.Sure wish it didn't overscan; the highest actual aspect ratio I've measured* on a Panavision film (Tom Hanks's 'Big') is 2.20, which means the TV is hiding about 3/4" per side. Maybe there's an overall-width control in this one.
.* Obsessive? Compulsive? WHO, ME? Just because I've remeasured the AR of EVERY DVD in my cabinet doesn't mean I'm obsessed with this stuff!...much. :-)

Overscanning is common. DVE has a screen that lets you see just how much your set overscans.

Developed by an ace ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) technician to fine tune your display via your home DVD player - test patterns etc.
Some folks have a pro calibrate their sets in home to get the most from their displays but even us "amachoors" can adjust our sets for better performance using the Video Essentials disc. "essential" fpor getting the picture a top notch display is capable of. Tweaky types can have a blast.
