4k is a resolution that has previously been used for Digital Intermediary
in scaning films for effects and color corection but now the possibility for
content filmed in 4k from a camera is around the corner. Check red.com
to see the camera that people are craping themselves over.
The pixels size is about 4000x2000 so about 4 times the resolution of
1080 based hd. Its going to be the next big thing in film making the
post production workflow has to be woked out and the huge amounts
of data have to be dealt with. What effects that this will have in your
living room is probably not going to be huge, the industry has had
a difficult enough time getting 1080 distributed.
Follow Ups:
As someone who works in the AV industry (production, not sales, thank goodness), I have heard about these cameras, but never touched them yet. Finally a link! Thanks...

I didn't see it but my boss checked it out at NAB vegas and
said it was stunning, another vendor we work with was
shaking I was told he was so excited. Check out some of
the footage at the site and remember its a 18k camera.
This is going to be huge 2k and maybe 4k desktop video
editing within the next year maybe and a camera that
is scalable from 4k down to dv,takes prime lenses and
the body costs 18k. The lack of a solid way to back up
the huge amount of data that will be generated is scary
but hopefully the people who are really smart will find a
way to deal with it all.Just have to wait and see how this all shakes down for
the end users and the audience at large.
