I have a 36" Sony XBR and the Sony DVD 550 player, currently running S video cable between them, just wondering component video would be better and why?
Yes, absolutely noticable. My Toshiba SD-3109 has both Component and S-Video hooked up to a Samsung Tantus 40" WideScreen LCD RPTV. Switching between the two I have noticed these differences. Immediately I noticed that the S-Video was brighter than CompVideo. This is due to the better pixel and color resolution of the CompVideo signal. Higher resolutions have less illumination(same thing on PC Monitors). This is quite evident specially when comparing fully lit areas of the picture. CompVideo exposes more color shades whereas in S-Video the lit area is just a white blotch. Sharpness is about the same, CompVideo is just a little better.Mind you my testing was not comprehensive by any means. Probably only took 10 minutes of comparing.
The Only problem I had with CompVideo is with non-anamorphic DVD's. My TV will stretch the picture, in this case I will switch to S-Video to have aspect ratio control. For some reason viewing on CompVideo will not allow any changes to the aspect ratio.
Component video has twice the bandwidth on the color difference channels. This can give you deeper color saturation. The colors will also have less noise in them. The larger the screen, the more noticable it is.It also allows you to bypass the NTSC decoder. This can often eliminate the red push. Now if your TV allows you to adjust tint on component, then they are screwing around with the signal and all bets are off. Toshiba does this. Its still a better picture than S, but its not perfect.
yeah...
It seems to me that the composite to s-video jump is THE most dramatic improvement you can do.However, there are SOME who say that s-video to component video change gave them the best and biggest improvement. I doubt it. Even on projection TV s-video and component video connections seem VERY,VERY similar to me.
S video is slightly, but not dramatically better than composite. Component is dramatically better than s video. Try it and you will be amazed. As for the technicalities of why I suggest you research the archive here & elsewhere on the net.Peace at AA
