Does anyone have any opinions about a quality entry level DVD player? At this point I do not have a full HT system so it's just going to be plugged into my 32"SONY (no components or even S-video available) via composite. I'm thinking about the TOSHIBA SD-2109 or the PIONEER 525. Is there agreement about these players out there? any other models I should seriously consider?
Panosonic A-105 - The best out there for under $400
Hola Zap. Do you have a digital receiver or processor? Are you considering to buy one? These are important question you has to answer before buying a new DVD player. DVD's came with and without digital processing. If your receiver is digital ready you need the DVD with internal processor. It cost more and the processing is not as good of the digital receivers. If the receiver has the processor you need a regular DVD , which cost less. For the price that you pay these days, you could buy the Pioneer 525 , it is upgradable with the use of an external DAC ( the DVD acts as a transport). It has a digital output that pass a 24/96 signal.
The Toshiba is a good video player and are fairly good audio players too. I have one SD-2108 for two years now and am very pleased with it.
Plan your buy for the future, consult with the sales people and contrast opinions from store to store.
Goog luck, if need more help e-mail me.
I got the Sony DVP-500 it has been flawless with an awesome remote amazing sound from any source cd, dd, pro-logic DVD give it a go!!Most DVD players have pretty much the same overall quality unless you get into the real high end equipment check out sony, samsung, pioneer, toshiba, etc
Yes! Buy yourself a Samsung DVD 709. It's really good out of the box and if you replace a few caps it a Giant Killer! I've done three so far two for me and one for a Doctor. He didn't know from the hot end of an iron, so I did his. Less than one hour to do it all. It got a picture that is so clear it gives a greater depth of field. I can now see everyone with their warts and all. The SOUND is SOOOO GOOOD!!! It can seperate every sound so whatever part you want to listen to you can. Bass, strings, horns, whatever it there. Does it sound like I hot for this machine? I am. bobwire
I have the Pioneer DV-525. Amazing how you can find great deals on this unit. I bought it off ubid brand new and cost me $208 delivered.Happy Hunting

I have the 525, and it has worked flawlessly for dozens of movies. The Toshiba has just been replaced by a new model number, 1200 I think. In addition to those, people also seem to like the Panasonic A120. I would stay away from the entry level Sony players; apparently lots of problems.Of all the budget players, I think the Pioneer 525 is the best. It will pass full 24bit/96kHz from the _digital_ outputs, and has excellent video quality. The only bad part is that the remote buttons are really small, but most people with DVD players have a system that would benefit from a universal remote, and those are really cheap nowadays.
Some people even use the Pioneer 525 as a transport for the Bel Canto DAC-1, as recommended by Bel Canto. I think that's recommendation enough. I've seen the 525 for $250 most everywhere now, and there's a five-free-movie deal going, which I got when I got mine, 6 months ago.
Cheers,
