Any recommendations for a dvd transport for home theater under $2000? Thanks.
Bob,There are only a few DVD transports out there (Proceed PMDT for one,
and Theta David another). I am unaware of any less than 2k. My
advice, though, is to wait until the universal DVD format(i.e. DVD-A
DVD-V) is established before making a major purchase. The first
universal players will be out this summer from Toshiba, Panasonic
and I would presume the high-end companies might follow suit with
their transport versions later. The question that begs asking is
do you need a dedicated transport with ultra-high res. 24/192 PCM?
The other problem is that because of copyright concerns the initial
DVDA players will not offer the high-res. bits at a digital output,
only through their 6 analog outs, so dedicated universal transports
may be delayed even longer.cpcat@tcnet.net
Stereophile Guide to Home Theater June 2000 issues . Reviewers seems well pleased with Pioneer DV-626D which is only 699.99 and another reviewer could find little fault with the progressive scan Toshiba SD-5109 questioning whether the top of the line model could outperform it. It cost 999.00.
Hi BobOurs is an earlier model but no DD output but it gives a brilliant picture on good material with component output to our 8 inch Barco projector thrown onto a 110 inch screen.
However I would not try to claim it is the best available out there. Visually I find it hard to imagine the output being bettered but I guess others might be superior sonically.
Peace at AA

One question to ask yourself is if you want to get a progressive output dvd player rather than buying into the older technology of interlaced output. I don't know the prices of the progressive scans and I know that they are just coming onto the scene, so another option is to get a modest player now to "make do" and then move on next year to the new technology. Personally, I have a Denon 5000 as well as a SONY multi-player (holds 200 disks; the 850 is the number I believe). Both deliver a nice picture with my 8" CRT projector and Faroudja 2200.The other unit that I have in a family room is the Toshiba (I have an "old" one -- the new one out is getting great reviews) and I've been happy with it as well.
Good Luck.
p.s. the other high end one to consider is the Pioneer Elite (05 I think is the number) because I've seen lots of reviews giving it very high praise and it is around 1400 list I believe.
I think you're thinking of the DV-09. It seems verrry soft to me. Additionally it is a slow loader (if that's important). Check out the Revox B-27 (i think) ~$2000 looks nice, sounds nicer.
