One question to ask yourself is if you want to get a progressive output dvd player rather than buying into the older technology of interlaced output. I don't know the prices of the progressive scans and I know that they are just coming onto the scene, so another option is to get a modest player now to "make do" and then move on next year to the new technology. Personally, I have a Denon 5000 as well as a SONY multi-player (holds 200 disks; the 850 is the number I believe). Both deliver a nice picture with my 8" CRT projector and Faroudja 2200.The other unit that I have in a family room is the Toshiba (I have an "old" one -- the new one out is getting great reviews) and I've been happy with it as well.
Good Luck.
p.s. the other high end one to consider is the Pioneer Elite (05 I think is the number) because I've seen lots of reviews giving it very high praise and it is around 1400 list I believe.
I think you're thinking of the DV-09. It seems verrry soft to me. Additionally it is a slow loader (if that's important). Check out the Revox B-27 (i think) ~$2000 looks nice, sounds nicer.
