I have a Toshiba SD-2008 DVD player. When playing DVD's where the action becomes intense the video signal flickers. Usually inconjuction with a rapid change from light to dark segments as in lots of action. The words "Unusable Signal" will be displayed for a split second and then the picture comes back. Nothing ever happens to the audio signal.I have always used the S-video connections to hook it into my system. Orginally, I directly hooked it into my 36" RCA. Now I am passing the signal through a Denon 3300. The same problem exists.
I called the local repair shop that Toshiba recomends and the tech wants me to bring it in for "Bios Upgrade". Has anyone seen or heard of this before? What about upgrading the bios? I got the feeling that this could be an expensive guessing game.
Any help or comment are GREATLY appreciated as this is really bugging me.
I have the same problem, I got a Sony s-500 dvd player hooked up to a rca 27" t.v. using s-video the picture quality is supurb however at fast points in a movie preview or very very quick edits I also get the "unusable Signal" and this PISSES ME RIGHT OFF..!!!!I would also like some suggestions on how to fix the problem
I used to own a GE 32" which is an RCA in disguise. I had the same problem with it even with video tape (but not with TV). After doing some digging and calling some TV repair techs and talking with them, I finally found a tech that knew what he was talking about. The problem is your TV. In fact it is a common problem with the Thompson based sets (according to him). He mentioned that their might even be a service bullitan on the issue. The problem? Believe it or not, its solder. The combination of inferior solder and sometimes bad solder joints is the problem. Certain points in the set have to be resoldered with silver solder to fix the probelm. I can not, however, verify if the fix works. My set was sold to a friend who didn't experence the problem with his setup (he just watches TV with no other sources) Hope this helps.
Geno,Yes, I know that problem all too well. When I saw the words "UNUSABLE SIGNAL" I knew you had an RCA television! If you have another set of S-cables swap them out. It's possible that one of the solder joints inside your current s-cable is bad, swapping cables will tell you if that's the problem. If you swap s-cables and are still getting the "U S" message, then most probably one (or both) of the s-video solder joints inside the RCA is bad and in need of repair. At any rate, it's not your Toshiba. But as heavy as the RCA is, you're probably wishing it was the Toshiba.
