I have just sold my Yamaha RX-V2092 that I was using as a pre/pro and I am now on a mission to get either an outborad procesor or receiver.I will be mating it with a Sherbourn 5/1500 amp.I have seen the SonyTA-E9000ES,Marantz AV-9000,Denon 4800 (receiver),B&K 4090 and Reference 20 (used)Parasound 1800.Component switching would be nice, but not a huge priority.I would appreciate any input or advice.Thank you
I have been using a Denon AVR 3300 receiver, which cost me about $900 new, for three or four months and have been pleased with the sound and functionality. It has component video switching. The DSP modes all sound pretty stupid to me. However, the 5-channel stereo mode can be addictive on electronic-heavy music (dance club music and the like). I switch back to stereo for more traditional music. The universal learning remote would appear to have all of the functions I would ever use, but it is for whatever reason cumbersome and I end up using the remotes of the other components for tasks other than switching and volume. It has pre-outs and (helpful for upgrades) 8-channel analog inputs. The multi-room function seems to me to be fairly useless as it requires an integrated amp in the other room.I consider the piece a very good value. As you can see my discussion is fairly feature-focused; it is my first home theater system and I don't really feel qualified to say much about the audio/video fidelity, other than that I am very pleased with it and that it sounded "better" than the other units (in the same price range) I auditioned before buying it.
I've got a Sony TA-E9000ES. Excellent sound and build quality. The DSP modes on this one are truely useful and not at all 'DSP' sounding in the usual sense. The remote is... well.. the remote sucks, horribly. All I use it for is to turn on and switch to the correct input, though I do plan on getting some other sort of universal remote eventually. I got mine for $1300 from http://www.sounddistributors.com/, a very nice place to deal with, no hassles. I did look at the Sherwood and Parasound as well, but their lack of multiple digital inputs kept me away, the Sony has more than enough to last a while with a rather sizable system.
Why not try the Sherwood Newcastle AVP 9080 pre/pro/tuner? It's about $1,000 brand new (if discounted a little). It sounds wonderful, though it's not the most user friendly system in the world. Check out reviews of it at AR (I know the reviews at AR can be crap, but most of the ones on this unit are pretty accurate -- I'll review mine pretty soon).
How about a used Lexicon DC-1 or DC-2? These can usually
be had for about $1500 (sometimes even less). I've seen
fully loaded units (DD,DTS,Logic 7,etc,) for this price.
